Australian court approves ban on cigarette pack logos
Reuters: Tobacco companies must now remove their branding and logos from cigarette packs in Australia after the high court approved plain-packaging legislation.
Tobacco companies such as Philip Morris and British American Tobacco challenged the new legislation, claiming it would violate their intellectual property rights, but the court found the legislation legal and said the new laws wouldn’t breach any trademark rights.
The new plain-packaging will be olive-green and carry health warnings with graphic images.
“The laws, the toughest in the world, are in line with World Health Organization recommendations and are being watched closely by Britain, Norway, New Zealand, Canada and India, which are considering similar measures.”
